April Fools Day 101 (3.21.06)


Have you ever walked into work or school on April 1st not realizing it’s April Fool's Day and to you it’s just another normal day, but all of a sudden someone says “Hey, your underwear is showing?” or “Hey, you’ve got something on your shirt?” and you actually fall for it? Even if you don’t want to admit it…we ALL know it’s happened to us at least once. Most of us ask ourselves “ Who the heck invented this day? And why do we celebrate it? Well, the answer to that is uncertain, but here are a few theories on why we get pranked or become pranksters every April 1st.

Ø The Western World celebrated the New Years with the Start of Spring on March 25th, when they used the Julian calendar. However, since that fell on the Holy Week they changed it to the 1st of April but after switching to the Gregorian calendar in the 1500’s, we moved New Year’s to January. So those who still celebrated it on April First were called “April Fools”. And you thought Daylight Savings Time was confusing.

Ø Certain Encyclopedias think that the arrival of Spring is directly related to April Fools because it’s when nature “Fools” humans with erratic weather.
