Speed Racer's Birthday at San Diego Comic-Con
(San Diego) - August 1, 2002 - Go Speed Racer, Go! It was 35 years ago that Speed Racer first dashed across American television screens. Online pop culture retailer WickedCoolStuff.com and SpeedRacer.com are throwing Speed a birthday party this week at Comic-Con in San Diego. Fans are invited to drop by for Speed Racer trivia, screening of classic episodes, and birthday cake.
One of the very first Japanes animated programs to succeed in the United States, the action packed adventures of Speed Racer and his gizmo-packed car, the Mach 5, opened the door for the Anime invasion that followed. Now animated programs from Japan, like Dragonball Z and Pokemon, are a mainstay of US networks.
Comic-Con International is the nation's largest pop culture convention. Estimated turnout for the 2002 convention is 60,000. The convention will be held at the San Diego Convention Center August 1-4, 2002.
